SIG director tasked with bringing marketing code to life

Steve Marr

After 17 years with SIG, and more than 30 years in construction products sales, Steve Marr has been seconded to be interim chief executive of Construction Product Information Ltd (CPI), the company set up to administer the proposed Code for Construction Product Information (CCPI).

CPI is owned by the Construction Product Association (CPA), which produced the code to put a stop to construction product manufacturers and distributors making misleading or inaccurate claims about their products.

It is the response of the building products sector to Dame Judith Hackitt’s independent review of Building Regulations & Fire Safety, commissioned by the government in the wake of the 2017 Grenfell Tower fire. She made clear that there was a need to address the marketing practices of the sector.

The Code for Construction Product Information (CCPI) was written by the Construction Products Association’s Marketing Integrity Group and first published in draft form in January 2021. However, the scheme has still not gone live because CPI has been unable to get professional indemnity insurance, which effectively prevents it from operating. [See our previous report here.]

Steve Marr replaces Amanda Long as CPIU chief executive, who handed in her notice ninbe months into the job. Amanda Long was also chief executive Considerate Constructors Scheme but there has not yet been any announcement on her successor in that role.

Steve Marr said: “I’m delighted to have been appointed interim chief executive for CPI Ltd and to be able to contribute to taking forward this hugely important assurance scheme for our industry. I look forward to working with manufacturers on this journey to ensure robust construction product information management systems are in place, in line with the eleven clauses of the code.”

CPI chair David Topliffe said: “We are delighted to have Steve join us on secondment from SIG where his relevant experience will prove most valuable. His background and strong industry knowledge will be vital to the commercial development of the organisation as it drives much-needed leadership and culture changes throughout the industry.”

NuGen Properties built an extension to the rear of my property, replacing the old conservatory. I am so pleased I chose this company. From the initial quotation, through the build and after they were professional, polite & well mannered. They kept the site tidy throughout the build and kept me informed of each stage as it happened. The work was finished to a good standard and I have had nothing but compliments on their work. I am already planning for them to come back and do some more work for me in a few months. I would 100% recommend them.
